NEVER TOO YOUNG TOO SERVE

ENGINEER Choo Ooi Beng created history of sorts when he became the youngest person in Perak appointed as a councillor for the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPPK).

Describing his appointment as a big honour, Choo who turns 27 on Dec 8, has vowed not waste the opportunity given by serving the community well throughout his term.

His age would enable him to work harder and perform better than the rest, said the Universiti Sains Malaysia graduate.

As a proof of his commitment towards his new responsibility, he has decided to quit his high paying job as an engineer with a company in Kedah.

Since assuming the post on July 18, Choo said the most common complaints he had to deal with were those pertaining to rubbish collection, clogged drains and uncut grass.

He, however, observed that MPPK was quite proactive in handling the problems particularly in dealing with non-performing contractors by terminating their contracts immediately.

He expressed hope that the new contractors appointed by MPPK would give a better service to help improve the residents’ living conditions.

As a councilor, Choo has his hands full in trying to clear the backlog of work during the four-month period when the councillors were not appointed yet.

He also said MPPK and all its councillors should come up with ideas to boost the council’s income.
With a higher income, it would mean that MPPK would be able to deliver better services to the residents, said the Kuala Kangsar DAP division secretary.

Choo also said he would do whatever he could to help the community generate more economic activities.

This, he said, included the need to boost the image of the royal town, adding that promotion of Kuala Kangsar as a favourite tourist destination was still inadequate due to the lack of financial resources.

The town should also have a special centre for the labu sayong industry as the trade had successfully attracted many foreign tourists, he said.

Meanwhile, a resident from Taman Tun Sambathan Sak Yoke Mong said councillors must be able to handle the day-to-day problems faced by the people.

She said they must also attend to all complaints from residents in their zones ranging from petty matters such as mosquitoes to more serious matters like floods.

Ahmad Mohd Zainal, 65, from Kampung Bahagia said Choo should work doubly hard due to his age.

He noticed that there had been a lot of positive changes since the Pakatan Rakyat ruled the state due to swift action taken on complaints made by the public.
